Our back story

I was diagnosed with coeliac disease 11 years ago. For me, a single crumb of gluten is enough for me to be ill for days. Over time, I learned how to adapt. At home, at work, in daily life - I’ve found ways to manage. Apart from travel.

Going to a new destination has become a chore - with days of research. The language and cultural barrier means safety is often a real challenge. 

And it’s not just about safety — it’s about experience.

When I go to Paris, I want a croissant.

When I go to Italy, I want a pizza.

More than anything I want a base where I know I can find a safe and enjoyable meal. 

This is possible. There are great options out there; the problem is finding them.

There are some excellent tools for finding gluten-free restaurants - FindMeGF and Atly, for example. But when it comes to hotels, the information gap is huge.

Blogs are rich sources of information, but they are quickly out-dated and I find myself frustrated when the recommended hotels turn out to be fully booked, out of budget or not suitable for my needs. Meanwhile the large booking platforms offer vague labels like “gluten free options” without any check on quality, safety standards or variety. No more fruit salads,please. 

So in March 2026, I launched Free From Travel.

The goal is to help people find and book hotels where they can be confident they can find safe and enjoyable options for breakfast, lunch and dinner. 

We don’t guess.

We don’t rely on vague labels.

We do the research.

We speak directly to hotels.

We ask them their safety standards in detail.

We provide transparency on their responses. 

And we re-confirm those standards every year to keep the information accurate and trustworthy.
